Announcement – Information about Independent Nominating Petitions
April 13, 2021: First date for signing Independent Nominating Petitions
May 18-25, 2021: Dates for filing Independent Nominating Petitions
May 28: A certificate of acceptance or declination of an independent nomination for an office to be filled at the time of a general election shall be filed not later than the 3rd day after the 23rd Tuesday preceding such election.
June 1: A certificate to fill a vacancy caused by a declination of an independent nomination for an office to be filled at the time of a general election shall be filed not later than the 6th day after the 23rd Tuesday preceding such election.
June 25: A candidate who files a certificate of acceptance for an office for which there have been filed certificated or petitions designating more than one candidate for the nomination of any party, may thereafter file a certificate of declination not later than the 3rd day after the primary election.

Please follow these protocols when filing Independent Nominating Petitions at the Sullivan County Board of Elections Office:
- The Sullivan County Board of Elections Office will accept petition filings on a “first-come-first-served” basis between the hours of 9:00 am – 5:00 pm from May 18 through May 25, 2021.
- Petition filers will be taken one at a time at the Board of Elections Office counter. This procedure will be strictly enforced.
- The waiting line for filing petitions will start at the door outside the BOE Office entrance on the North Street side of the Government Center in Monticello.
